Derek Stenson is a Partner in the Cayman Islands office of Conyers and head of the insurance and reinsurance practice. Derek has been an insurance legal practitioner since 2006 and has been practising in the Cayman Islands since 2011. He specialises in insurance, reinsurance and structured products, as well as a broad range of corporate and finance matters.

Derek has extensive experience advising a wide range of international financial and insurance institutions on all aspects of insurance and reinsurance law and regulation, and he and his team advise the majority of the commercial reinsurers based in the jurisdiction. Derek also has particular expertise advising on repackagings and collateralized loan obligations, corporate finance and M&A transactions, portfolio transfers, restructurings, stock exchange listings, mergers, migrations, contractual negotiations and regulatory and compliance matters.

Derek is the chairperson of the insurance/reinsurance sub-committee of the Cayman Islands Financial Services Legislative Committee which is responsible for advising the Cayman Islands government on changes to the legislative framework applicable to insurers and reinsurers domiciled in the jurisdiction.
